In the book when people stand up for Atticus as he leaves, i think it was an appropriate thing to do. The people up in the balcony stand for him because they are extremely pleased with all that he has done for Tom Robinson. They are glad that he was the one that defended him.
Losing a battle when you know you are right is much better than winning one when you knew you were wrong because its morally wrong. If I knew something was wrong and went along with it and won, I would know that someone innocent paid for me just trying to win.In a debate or something like that sometimes people have to defend things that they don't really believe in.
